What is Artificial Intelligence?
The artificial intelligence is the development of computer systems able to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as visual perception, recognition of speech, decision-making and translation between different languages. Some of the key tasks that artificial intelligence is capable of doing are:
Acquiring and processing knowledge
Learning and adapting to the information
Reasoning and planning
Ability to manipulate the acquired knowledge
Types of ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
Such machines perceive the world as it is and simply react to it. IBM’s Deep Blue is a reactive machine that perceives the pieces of the chess board and reacts to them. The Deep Blue defeated the grand master Kasparov under regular time controls. It can neither refer to any previous experiences nor can improve with practice over time.
These machines retain data for a very short period of time and make proper decisions and execute appropriate actions based on the data retained. They cannot add the data to their library of experiences. Examples would include self-driving cars or chat-bots.
Theory Of Mind:
Such AI has the capacity to understand thoughts and emotions that affect human behavior. The idea is to relate to human thoughts as to what a human mind perceives and sees the events around it that shape its emotions. Though there has not yet been built a computer that has a mind it can be said that this form of AI is the future.
An example would be a C-3 Po from Star Wars.
Although still the ingredient of science fiction, many AI enthusiasts believe them to be the ultimate future of the development of artificial intelligence. Such machines if practically possible can preserve themselves, can predict their own needs and demands can make abstractions and inferences. Whether or not such machines can exist is a philosophical thought at present but the very idea of them is interesting and amazing.
What does AI mean for us in the future?
There is no doubt about the fact that we as humans have always been fascinated with machines that can learn and exhibit human-like attributes. To some extent, our imaginations have been well fed by the sci-fi movies that show us what we can and might achieve in the near future with AI. The question is, do we really need such advanced machines around us in our lives and can we afford to be so dependent on them. As feared by the greatest physicist of the modern age, “Stephen Hawking”, Artificial Intelligence will one day rule our world so much so that it might even threaten the human civilization as a whole. We just might need to ponder on the thought of machines ruling us in the future If that is what is really going to happen.
